Managing Web plug-ins

Installing plug-ins

You can purchase plug-ins from software vendors or download them from the Internet. AppleShare IP works with WebSTAR API 1.2-compatible plug-ins.

    To install a plug-in:
Follow the instructions that came with the plug-in software.
If no directions came with the software, drag the plug-in to the Plug-Ins folder inside the default Web folder on your server.
    Adjust the plug-in memory.

IMPORTANT: For security, set explicit access privileges to the Plug-Ins folder. Set privileges for the User/Group and Everyone category to None. This prevents users from changing the contents of the folder or downloading plug-in files.

Turning plug-ins on or off

To turn Web plug-ins on or off:
1 Open Mac OS Server Admin and log on to the server you want to administer.
2 Press the Web Services button and choose Configure Web Server.
    3 Click the Plug-Ins tab.
4 To turn plug-ins on or off, select or deselect the "Enable Plug-ins" checkbox.
    5 Click Save.
6 Stop and start the Web server.

Setting aside memory for plug-ins

You need to specify how much memory is available for Web
plug-ins. All plug-ins in the Web folder load when the Web server starts up. The documentation for a plug-in should specify how much memory it uses.

To set aside memory for plug-ins:
1 Open Mac OS Server Admin and log on to the server you want to administer.
2 Press the Web Services button and choose Configure Web Server.
    3 Click the Plug-Ins tab.
4 Set the number in the box labeled "Maximum plug-in memory usage" to equal the total amount of memory all your plug-in require.
For information on memory usage, see Plug-Ins settings.
    5 Click Save.
6 Stop and start the Web server.

Activating special plug-ins

    To activate special plug-ins:
1 Open Mac OS Server Admin and log on to the server you want to administer.
2 Press the Web Services button and choose Configure Web Server.
    3 Click the Plug-Ins tab.
4 Click the appropriate button and locate the plug-in you want to use.
For information on each plug-in type, see Plug-Ins settings.
    5 Click Save.
6 Stop and start the Web server.
